Obituary for Michael Peter Ciavarella

Michael Peter Ciavarella
May 1, 1962 – January 10, 2021

Michael Peter Ciavarella passed into eternal rest on the morning of January 10, 2021. He was born on a beautiful spring day, May 1, 1962. Mike’s life was defined by family, helping others, and perpetual learning. Devoted husband and best friend of Deena (née Scaglione), together for nearly 40 years. Beloved and proud father to Emma Ginevra and Sara Bridget, who were his treasures. Dearest brother of Ginevra (Conrad) Pomykala, the late Michele Ciavarella Martinelli, Peter (Silvia) Ciavarella, and Marie (R. Jovita Baber) Ciavarella. Loving uncle to Max (Ashely) Martinelli, Sam Cody Martinelli, Marco and Paolo Ciavarella, Amalia and Stella Baber-Ciavarella, and Ariana and Jenna Scaglione. Dear great-uncle to Ashton and Christian Martinelli. Fond nephew of William (Mary Ann) Kearns. Cousin to many. He was preceded in death by his dear parents, Peter J. Ciavarella and Margaret Joan (née Kearns) Ciavarella, and his aunts and uncles Rachel Ciavarella, Albert (Betty) Ciavarella, Mary Kearns (Robert) Richards, Patricia Kearns (Paul) Warrick, and Sally Kearns (Jack) Hake.

Mike grew up in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood and remained connected to his many friends from the neighborhood, who brought him great joy. He continued to return to Austin to volunteer and support the community. Mike attended St. Angela Catholic School and Lane Tech High School. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Dominican University and his MBA from National Louis University. Devoting his entire 40-year professional career to excellence and efficiencies at United Parcel Service, he was a UPS-er for life.

Mike was a skilled grill-master, gardener, and golfer. He loved playing and watching sports, particularly Notre Dame football with his father and daughters. Mike enjoyed a warm summer night on the patio, a good cigar, ‘70s rock, poetry, and his motorcycle–but more than anything he loved his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Michael’s name to St. Angela Catholic School or the United Way of Metro Chicago. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a memorial mass and celebration of life will be held at a later date. Services will be arranged by Tohle Funeral Home, in Chicago, Illinois.
